Calvin was charged with first-degree murder and convicted. The jury deliberated for less than four hours before returning a guilty verdict based on his confession and the physical evidence of Nicole’s cross. The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment. Technically, because of the legal framework governing crimes committed before January 1, 1995, Calvin retained the ability to petition for parole after a minimum term. In reality, the brutality of the crime and the deliberate destruction of evidence made any release virtually impossible.
By early 2020, Vanessa had recovered enough from her coma to face prosecution. She was charged as an accessory before the fact to first-degree murder. Under Virginia law, a person who aids or encourages a felony before it is committed can face the same penalties as the person who carries it out. Prosecutors could have pursued a life sentence.
Instead, Vanessa’s attorneys negotiated a plea agreement, citing her lack of prior criminal history and her weakened physical condition after the accident. She pleaded guilty to complicity and second-degree murder and received a 20-year prison sentence. The Virginia State Bar permanently revoked her law license, ending her legal career with no possibility of reinstatement. Everything she had built collapsed.
Maya’s side of the family severed all contact with Vanessa. Maya later stated publicly that justice has no statute of limitations, no matter how much time has passed. For Beatrice, who was in her 70s by then, the outcome did not bring closure. It brought devastation of a different kind.
For 35 years, she had held on to the hope that Nicole might still be alive somewhere. The truth was worse than any uncertainty. Her younger daughter had died on the very day she disappeared, and her older daughter had known the truth from the beginning. After the verdict, Beatrice said she lost both daughters the day Calvin confessed.
She eventually moved into a care facility, where Maya visits her regularly. She refuses to speak about Vanessa or even acknowledge her existence. As far as Beatrice is concerned, both of her daughters died in October 1984.
