What to do if a gecko enters your house
The answer is simple: in most cases, you don’t need to do anything. The gecko may have entered accidentally or while searching for food, and once its needs are satisfied, it will come out on its own. Simply leave a window open, if possible, to allow it to easily find its way out.
Characteristics of the gecko
Geckos belong to the Gekkonidae family and are mainly found in Mediterranean regions, where the climate is warm and temperate.
Their most striking feature is their ability to climb vertical surfaces and even walk upside down. This isn’t achieved by any adhesive, but by the unique structure of their legs.
The pads of the geckos’ feet are covered with millions of tiny microscopic hairs, called setae , which exploit van der Waals forces , the weak interactions between molecules. The enormous number of these tiny contact points allows the gecko to adhere effectively to a wide variety of surfaces. This extraordinary mechanism has inspired numerous scientific research and technological applications, including those developed by NASA.
Geckos typically measure between 10 and 16 centimeters, including the tail. They are shy and harmless animals, tending to flee when they sense human presence. They will only bite if grabbed or severely disturbed, but the bite is harmless and non-venomous.
Why it is useful to let him live in the house
Besides being a fascinating animal, the gecko performs an important ecological function. It feeds on numerous insects, including mosquitoes, flies, spiders, bedbugs, moths, and occasionally small cockroaches. Its presence therefore contributes to the natural control of these animals, reducing the need for insecticides.
Learning to live with geckos means promoting the natural balance of the ecosystem and recognizing the useful role these small reptiles play in our homes.
