Geckos are small, fast, and stealthy. The most common gecko to enter homes is the so-called house gecko , a small reptile closely related to lizards. It is especially attracted to brightly lit environments, because light attracts numerous insects, which are its main source of food.
For this reason, it’s not advisable to hunt them: they’re not dangerous, don’t transmit diseases, and perform an important natural insect control function. If a gecko lives near your home, it can help reduce the presence of mosquitoes, flies, midges, and other unwanted insects.
Why do geckos come into the house?
The main reason is lighting. Homes, especially modern ones, often remain lit even at night. Artificial light attracts numerous insects and, consequently, the geckos that prey on them.
Light pollution also alters the behavior of many animal species. Increased light at night disrupts natural rhythms, affecting both predators and prey and altering ecosystem balances.
