The lunula, though it may seem mysterious, is simply the visible part of the nail matrix, that is, the area where nail growth begins. Its characteristic white color is explained by the absence of visible blood vessels in this area, unlike the rest of the nail bed, which has a pinkish hue.
In some people, the crescent-shaped crease (lunula) is clearly visible, especially on the thumbs. In others, it is barely noticeable or almost nonexistent, which is generally normal. The lunula usually fades with age, a phenomenon also observed in children and which does not necessarily indicate a health problem. The shape and visibility of the lunula vary greatly depending on the individual, skin type, genetic predisposition, and even, sometimes, lighting.
Therefore, there is no cause for concern if the lunula is barely visible. The most important thing is its evolution over time, as well as the sudden appearance of any abnormality, provided that all associated symptoms are taken into account.
