My DIL Dumped Three Kids on…

Tears filled Macy’s eyes.

“You have no idea what I handle every day.”

“I know three kids are difficult.”

“No, you don’t.”

Her voice cracked.

“You leave before breakfast. You return after dinner. On weekends, you answer emails or make plans. Everyone tells me to ask for help, but nobody stays when I do.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“I thought you had things under control.”

“Because I made sure you could think that.”

She pointed at me.

“Then she arrived. She loves the children. They love her. For once, I thought I could breathe.”

I understood her exhaustion.

But I still couldn’t excuse what she had done.

Daniel placed the tablet on the table.

“I arranged licensed childcare through the resort for the remaining days.”

Macy stared at him.

“With what money?”

“The money set aside for your shopping appointment and our private dinners.”

“You promised me a break.”

“And I promised Mom a vacation. You took hers without asking.”

Her expression hardened.

“So I get punished for being overwhelmed?”

“You need rest,” Daniel said. “But you do not get to purchase it with my mother’s dignity.”

The room went still.

“The childcare stays because the children need safe, willing care,” he continued. “But Mom gets the first protected day. No errands. No children. No requests. The shopping appointment is canceled, and so are the private dinners until she has received the vacation we promised her.”

Macy looked at me.

“This is what you wanted?”

“No,” I said. “I wanted you to ask.”

Daniel turned toward the children.

“Grandma is our guest. She helps because she loves you, not because she owes us.”

Then he looked at Macy.

“You need to correct what you told them.”

Her face flushed.

“Right now?”

“Right now.”

For a moment, I thought she might refuse.

Then she knelt in front of the children.

“I told you Grandma had to watch you because Dad paid for her room,” she said. “That was wrong. Gifts do not buy someone’s time, and Grandma does not have to work for us.”

Emma looked at me.
