“Know your place. My husband paid for your vacation.”
I watched myself lower my eyes as she continued.
“You’re here to watch them. That’s the arrangement.”
The camera shifted as Caleb moved closer.
While I ran after Noah near the water, Macy called the other children over.
“Grandma has to do what we ask because Dad paid for her room.”
Emma’s voice followed.
“Can she come swimming with us?”
“She’s here to watch you, not relax.”
Then Macy lowered her voice.
“Do not mention this to your father. He’ll make a big deal out of it.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
He looked at Caleb.
“When did you send this to me?”
“Last night,” Caleb said. “I heard you asking Mom what happened. She said Grandma offered.”
He lowered his head.
“Grandma didn’t offer.”
Macy crossed her arms.
“I was frustrated.”
“You lied to my mother,” Daniel said.
“I needed help.”
“You could have asked.”
“I ask all the time.”
“You never asked me to bring Mom as unpaid childcare.”
Noah tugged at Daniel’s shirt.
“Is Grandma like the other babysitters who leave?”
Silence filled the room.
Daniel looked down.
“What other babysitters?”
Macy’s expression changed.
