Mold that moves? My mind raced. I didn’t know whether to be grossed out or terrified.
I went back to the apartment cautiously. The bumps seemed to react to my presence. I swear they shifted slightly when I stared at them.
The Creepy Realization
On the second night, I noticed tiny black specks around the bumps. Dust? Dirt? No. They were insect droppings. My stomach churned.
Then, out of habit, I reached for my phone to shine a light. One bump near the ceiling fell off the wall when I touched it—and hundreds of tiny crawling things spilled out.
WHATT. I jumped back. My heart raced. The walls… were alive.
I called Jenna immediately.
“Jenna… there are bugs. Like… hundreds of them. They’re everywhere!”
She froze. “Oh no… I forgot to tell you. That apartment hasn’t been lived in for six months. And there’s been a problem with… uh… some kind of infestation. I thought they’d cleaned it up. Maybe they didn’t.”
What I Learned
It turned out that the bumps were infestation nests—a combination of termites, carpenter bees, and some other small insects I couldn’t even identify. The building’s walls had been hiding the problem for years, and it only became visible once I stayed there.
Looking back, I realized:
- Old apartments can hide secrets. You never know what’s lurking behind old plaster or under the floorboards.
- Trust but verify. Even friends sometimes forget to mention details about a place, especially something gross like a bug infestation.
- Your instincts are valid. If something seems off, it probably is. Those bumps weren’t “quirky walls”—they were a warning.
Aftermath
I didn’t sleep there again. I packed my things and left immediately. Jenna promised to hire an exterminator and fully clean the apartment before anyone else stayed there.
Even now, I get shivers remembering those bumps. The thought that the walls were literally alive with crawling things is something that sticks with you.
It was terrifying, disgusting, and completely surreal—like a scene from a horror movie.
Lessons From My Experience
While it might sound dramatic, staying at that apartment taught me some important things:
- Always check a place thoroughly before staying, even if it’s a friend’s apartment.
- Tiny, unexplained bumps or irregularities in old buildings might be a serious problem, not just cosmetic.
- Trust your gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is.
