A personal memory hidden inside Celine Dion’s tribute to Peabo Bryson has given fans a new perspective on their iconic duet and on a moment that helped shape her future.
As she mourned the Grammy-winning singer’s death, Celine revealed an act of kindness that stayed with her for more than three decades.
The pair’s voices became inseparable through Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” one of the most recognizable movie songs of the 1990s. But according to Celine, what happened behind the scenes is what she remembers most today.
Her tribute offered a glimpse into a little-known chapter of her rise to international fame — a time when she was still finding her confidence in a language that was not her first.

Peabo built a successful career spanning pop, R&B, and adult contemporary music, earning multiple Grammy Awards and chart hits over several decades.
Yet for many fans, he will always be remembered for “Beauty and the Beast,” the beloved Disney ballad he recorded with Celine in 1991.

A Little-Known Moment Behind an Iconic Song
While remembering Peabo’s legacy, Celine focused on something far more personal than awards or chart success. She reflected on the period when they recorded “Beauty and the Beast” together — a moment that arrived at a crucial stage in her career.
Before becoming one of the world’s biggest music stars, Celine had primarily performed in French. She was still adapting to recording songs in English when she entered the studio with Peabo.
That experience could have been intimidating for a young artist stepping into a new market. Instead, Celine said Peabo helped put her at ease.
“He was so wonderful and generous to me all those years ago, when we recorded Beauty and the Beast. He made me so comfortable, as I was just learning to sing in English.”

The Song That Changed The Duo’s Lives
The timing of that support would prove significant. “Beauty and the Beast” became one of the defining songs of both artists’ careers and helped introduce Celine to a much wider audience.
The soundtrack for Disney’s animated classic earned seven Grammy nominations at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards and won four trophies.
Among those wins were Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television for Peabo and Celine’s duet.

The soundtrack also made Grammy history by becoming the first animated film soundtrack ever nominated for Album of the Year. For Celine, the song represented another major milestone.
The duet earned her first Grammy Award in 1992, just two years after the release of her first English-language album.

In a previous reflection on the song, Celine credited “Beauty and the Beast” as one of the most important duets of her early career, saying it gave her a major boost during those formative years.
