The officer nodded. “We received a report regarding unauthorized entry and potential destruction of property. Federal agents are also here regarding a separate complaint.”
Marisol whispered, “Major?”
Valerie did not look at her.
The federal investigator stepped forward. “Ms. Marisol Robles?”
Marisol swallowed. “I need a lawyer.”
The investigator nodded. “That would be wise.”
Diane began crying immediately. “Please, this is family. She made a mistake. She was under pressure. Valerie, tell them you don’t want charges.”
Valerie looked at the soaked photograph of her grandfather.
Then she looked at her mother.
“For once,” she said, “what I want matters.”
The investigation moved quickly after that.
The police documented the unauthorized entry and property destruction. The trust attorney confirmed Valerie was the legal beneficiary and sole authorized occupant of Thomas Robles’s house. Marisol had no ownership rights, no lease, no business license attached to the property, and no permission.
But the bigger storm came from the federal side.
MRA Strategic Solutions had submitted documents claiming Valerie was an advisory partner. Marisol had attached a shortened military biography pulled from public award announcements and altered it to imply that Valerie endorsed the company. She had used Valerie’s old email address to verify a bank application. She had forged an electronic signature on both commercial loan documents and vendor registration forms.
And she had done it because she believed Valerie would be too ashamed, too loyal, or too trained in silence to fight back.
That was Marisol’s mistake.
