Valerie sat back slowly in the hotel chair and looked at the dark window. Somewhere beyond the glass, the Pacific moved black and restless under the storm. She thought of Marisol laughing in the living room, calling her “the little soldier,” telling guests Valerie worked in warehouses and trucks.
