Inside the box was a single folded note.
My husband opened it with trembling hands. The paper was old but readable. It contained one sentence. “I wondered how long it would take you to find me.” I couldn’t breathe. My legs nearly gave out. We ran upstairs, locked the basement, and called the police. The investigation lasted weeks. What they eventually told us shocked us even more. The hidden room had been built by a former owner who disappeared in 1987 and was never found. They couldn’t explain the photo of us. They couldn’t explain the note. To this day, we still live in the house—but we never go into that room alone. And sometimes, late at night, we still hear something moving beneath the floor.
