The Wedding Letter – A Ragged Boy Walked Into a Wedding and Placed a Letter in Front of the Groom

The groom sat beside him.

“Tell me about your mother,” he said.

The boy looked at him.

“She was a nurse,” he said.

“A long time ago.”

“At a hospital in the north.”

The groom went very still.

“How long ago?” he said.

“Before I was born,” the boy said.

“She left when she found out she was pregnant.”

“She didn’t tell anyone.”

“She said the father didn’t know.”

“She said she didn’t want to ruin his life.”

The groom looked at his hands.

At the wedding ring he had put on two hours ago.

“What changed?” he said.

“Why now?”

The boy set down his plate.

“She’s sick,” he said.

“She wanted him to know.”

“Before it was too late.”

“Know what?” the groom said.

The boy looked at him.

“That he has two children.”

“Not one.”

The groom looked across the dance floor.

At his bride.

Dancing now with her father.

Her father.

The man who had raised her.

Who had walked her down the aisle.

Who didn’t know.

Who couldn’t know.

Because the secret had been kept.

By a woman in a hospital in the north.

Who had loved a man.

And walked away.

To protect everyone.

And destroyed everything.

Without knowing it.
Part 3

He called a pause to the wedding.

Told the bandleader there was a small delay.

Took his bride by the hand.

Led her to a private room off the ballroom.
