The year 1966 was supposed to be Ken Miles’ ultimate crowning achievement. He achieved what no driver had ever done before, winning both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring in the same year.
At the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, Miles was dominating the race and was on track to secure the legendary “Triple Crown” of endurance racing. However, due to a corporate PR decision by Ford executives who wanted a historic dead-heat photo finish, Miles was asked to slow down and let his teammates (Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon) catch up. Because McLaren had started further back on the grid, French race officials awarded the victory to McLaren based on a technicality regarding distance covered. Miles was robbed of his rightful, historic solo victory, yet he handled the heartbreak with absolute grace.
