The Real Purpose of the Big Red Spheres Outside Target Stores

If you have ever visited a Target store, you have probably noticed the large red concrete spheres positioned near the entrance. They are one of the retailer’s most recognizable features, and many shoppers assume they exist only as decorative elements or fun places for children to sit and play. Over the years, these bright red balls have become popular photo spots and familiar meeting places for families and friends. However, their primary purpose is far more practical. While they certainly contribute to the store’s distinctive appearance, they were originally installed with safety in mind.

These large spheres are a type of protective barrier, often referred to as bollards. Unlike the narrow metal posts commonly seen outside many buildings, Target chose solid concrete spheres that are both highly visible and extremely durable. Their job is to create a physical barrier between moving vehicles and the entrance to the store. If a driver accidentally loses control of a vehicle, presses the accelerator instead of the brake, or experiences another unexpected driving error, the heavy concrete spheres help prevent the vehicle from reaching pedestrians or the building itself.
