We like to believe that our successes are solely due to our own merit. Until reality catches up with us, mercilessly, and shows us what we refused to see. This is the story of an oversized ego, a lack of gratitude, and an awakening that came far too late.
We often imagine ourselves masters of our own destiny. We convince ourselves that every victory is the result of our efforts, our intelligence, our selflessness. She abandoned her studies, took on a series of odd jobs, and learned to survive amidst unpaid bills, power outages, and meager meals. Always with the same refrain: “It’s only temporary.” But the temporary became permanent.
