How are traffic signs classified?
In most countries in the region, including Argentina, road signs are organized into four main categories. Each one serves a specific function to regulate traffic and protect road users.
Regulatory or prescriptive
They establish obligations, prohibitions, and restrictions. Failure to comply can result in fines and penalties. These include stop signs, yield signs, no parking signs, and speed limits.
Preventive
They warn drivers about specific road conditions, such as sharp curves, steep inclines, railroad crossings, school zones, or sections with slippery surfaces. They are usually displayed in the form of a yellow diamond.
News
They provide useful information about services, distances, tourist destinations, gas stations, and rest areas. They are especially valuable for long-distance travel.
Transitional
They warn about temporary conditions, such as construction work, detours, road closures or maintenance work on the road.
Recommendations for driving in slippery areas
Even though the sign with diagonal lines indicates that the problematic section has ended, it’s not advisable to immediately let your guard down. Caution should be maintained, especially if weather or environmental factors persist that could affect grip.
Some basic guidelines for driving in these conditions are:
- Reduce your speed before entering the signposted section.
- Avoid sudden braking and abrupt steering maneuvers.
- Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
- Hold the steering wheel firmly but gently, without abrupt movements.
- Check the condition of the tires and the inflation pressure regularly
