If you have not found the donkey yet, there is no reason to consider the attempt unsuccessful. Rotate the picture 180 degrees and look again without immediately concentrating on the smallest details. Allow your eyes to scan the overall arrangement first. Then search for two elongated shapes that could form the ears and use those as reference points for identifying the head. Once the face becomes recognizable, tracing the remaining outline should become easier. Sometimes the entire figure seems to appear almost instantly after one crucial feature has been identified.
After seeing the donkey, try returning the image to its original position. Interestingly, you may now continue recognizing parts of the animal even though they were difficult to detect earlier. Once the brain has established a particular interpretation, it can become much easier to reconstruct it later. The same lines that initially appeared random now have meaning because you know how they fit together. This before-and-after experience is one of the reasons optical illusions can be so memorable. They allow people to notice their own perception changing in real time.
