Brenda frowned. “She’s exaggerating. She always does this when she doesn’t want to work.”
Elena collapsed to her knees.
“I’m bleeding,” she gasped. “Please… call a hospital.”
Lucas, the colleague, froze. “Daniel… this is serious.”
But Daniel didn’t move.
Instead, he sighed.
“Stop causing a scene, Elena. You’re ruining Christmas.”
That was the moment something inside her stopped breaking…
And started sharpening.
PART 4: THE LAWYER’S ARROGANCE
Elena reached for her phone.
Her hands shaking.
Her breath shallow.
Daniel saw it instantly.
And snatched it away.
“No ambulance,” he said coldly. “Do you want police here? Do you want my career destroyed?”
“I’m losing our child,” she cried.
He leaned closer, voice low.
“I am a lawyer, Elena. I know exactly how this looks. And I will make sure you look unstable if you push this.”
Brenda crossed her arms. “She probably tripped.”
Elena stared at them both.
At the people who were supposed to protect her.
Something inside her went completely still.
Then she spoke.
Her voice no longer shook.
“Call my father.”
Daniel blinked.
“Your father?” he laughed. “The man you said was a retired clerk?”
Elena looked him dead in the eye.
“Call him.”
Daniel hesitated only a second.
Then he dialed.
Put it on speaker.
Smiling.
Waiting for humiliation.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then a voice answered.
Cold.
Authoritative.
“Identify yourself.”
Daniel straightened. “Uh… yes, sir. I’m Daniel Mercer. Your daughter is—”
A pause.
Then everything changed.
“Put her on the phone.”
Elena whispered.
“Dad…”
And on the other end of the line, silence turned into a storm.
PART 5: THE NAME THAT BROKE THE ROOM
“I am Chief Justice Adrian Caldwell.”
The words landed like a collapsing building.
Daniel froze.
Brenda stepped back.
Lucas muttered, “Oh my God…”
The voice continued, each word heavier than the last.
“You have harmed my daughter.”
Daniel tried to recover. “Sir, it was an accident—”
“I don’t care what you call it,” the Chief Justice interrupted. “You have minutes before federal agents arrive at your location.”
Brenda laughed nervously. “This is ridiculous.”
But Daniel wasn’t laughing anymore.
Because lawyers know names.
And that name…
was not just powerful.
It was untouchable.
“You’re lying,” Daniel whispered at Elena.
Elena smiled faintly through tears.
“I told you,” she said. “You never knew who you married.”
Outside, sirens began to rise.
Fast.
Close.
Too many.
Daniel rushed to the window.
His face turned pale.
Black SUVs.
Unmarked vehicles.
Helicopter lights sweeping across the house.
Brenda screamed. “What is happening?!”
And then—
The front door exploded inward.
PART 6: THE FALL OF DANIEL MERCER
“FEDERAL MARSHALS! GET DOWN!”
Chaos swallowed the house whole.
Agents stormed in.
Brenda was dragged to the floor screaming.
Lucas ran.
Daniel froze.
A marshal tackled him instantly.
His face hit the floor right beside Elena’s blood.
“Do you know who I am?” Daniel shouted. “I’m a lawyer!”
“Shut up,” the agent replied.
