I Found My Birth Certificate In My Mother’s Drawer And The Father’s Name Wasn’t Who I Expected

When my mother asked me to help organize her bedroom after she moved into assisted living, I thought it would be a simple, emotional afternoon filled with old photos and forgotten memories. Her health had declined quickly over the past year, and although she was still sharp enough to joke with us, she could no longer live alone. I spent hours folding clothes, labeling boxes, and sorting through decades of papers. A birth certificate. My birth certificate.

At first, nothing seemed unusual. My name was there. My birth date was correct. My mother’s name was listed exactly as expected. But when my eyes moved to the line marked Father, my entire body froze. The name printed there was not my father’s name. Not even close. I stared at it, convinced I was reading it wrong. I checked again. Then again. My hands started trembling so hard the paper shook. The man who raised me, the man I had called Dad for forty-six years, was not listed as my father. I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
