I Brushed My Daughter’s Waist-Length Hair on Sunday—By Monday Evening, It Was Gone

Maya reached for Emily’s hand.

Emily squeezed it.

“Maya was scared to come back to school looking different.”

Then Maya whispered something into the microphone.

“So Emily asked if I wanted her to cut hers too.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Emily touched the short hair above her ear.

“I said yes.”

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Nobody had forced Emily to cut her hair.

Nobody had attacked her.

My daughter had voluntarily cut off the hair she treasured because her friend was terrified of facing school alone.

Emily continued.

“Grandma came when we called. She stayed with us the whole time.”

Her voice shook.

“So tonight, she’s who I want to thank.”

The auditorium went completely silent.

Then applause erupted.

I was crying before I realized it.

Near the side aisle, the three girls who had been whispering stood and tried to leave.

They didn’t get far.

The principal was already waiting near the door.

After the concert, we ended up in his office.

Emily calmly explained what had happened.

The gum.

The threatening note.

The names of the girls responsible.

What had seemed mysterious hours earlier finally had names and consequences.

Later, I found Linda beside her car.

“I was jealous of you,” I admitted.

Linda looked surprised.

“For years.”

Her expression softened.

“I never wanted to replace you, Rachel.”

I looked away.

Linda continued quietly.

“I was just sitting in the chair that kept being left empty.”

That hurt because it was true.

Emily appeared near the school entrance carrying her choir folder.

When she saw me, she stopped.

“You came.”

Two words.

They hurt more than any accusation could have.

“I should have been coming all along.”

Emily looked down.

“Grandma said you told your boss no.”

“I did.”

“Are you going to get fired?”

“Maybe.”

Her face fell.

I immediately took her hand.

“But that’s my problem. Not yours.”

She looked at me cautiously.

“Your next rehearsal is Thursday, right?”

Her eyebrows lifted.

“You know?”

“I do now.”

“And you’re actually coming?”

I squeezed her hand.

“I’ll get there before you do.”

Emily smiled.
