How to Safely Watch the Total Solar Eclipse and Northern Lights During This Rare Celestial Event

The most dramatic experience will happen inside the path of totality, the relatively narrow region where the Moon completely covers the bright surface of the Sun.

According to NASA information cited for the August 12 eclipse, the path of totality crosses Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain, and a small portion of Portugal. Northern Spain and Iceland are therefore expected to become particularly attractive destinations for eclipse watchers.

Several Spanish cities are positioned especially well. León and Zaragoza are inside the total eclipse zone, while places such as Madrid and Barcelona will remain outside totality but still experience an extremely deep partial eclipse.

A much larger area will experience at least part of the event. Portions of Canada, the northern United States, Europe, and northwestern Africa will see the Moon cover some portion of the Sun.

The distinction between a deep partial eclipse and totality is important. Even when almost all of the Sun is covered, a tiny exposed portion remains intensely bright. Only locations inside the path of totality experience the brief period when the Sun’s bright surface becomes completely hidden.

Why Totality Is So Different
A total solar eclipse is much more than watching the Sun slowly disappear.

As totality approaches, daylight changes dramatically. Shadows become unusual, temperatures may fall, and the surrounding landscape can begin to resemble twilight. When the Moon finally covers the Sun completely, the solar corona becomes visible around the dark silhouette of the Moon.

The transformation lasts only a short time. Maximum totality along the eclipse’s central path is expected to last a little over two minutes, and the exact duration depends on the observer’s location.

That makes preparation especially important. Someone who spends those precious minutes searching for a camera setting, locating glasses, or repositioning equipment can easily miss much of the experience.

Could the Northern Lights Really Appear Too
This part of the story is much harder to predict.

Unlike an eclipse, whose path can be calculated with extraordinary precision years in advance, aurora activity depends on changing conditions in space weather. Solar wind, geomagnetic activity, cloud cover, latitude, and local darkness can all determine whether an aurora becomes visible.

The source forecast for August 12 points to the possibility of minor geomagnetic storm conditions, which could improve the chances of seeing auroras at higher northern latitudes.

That does not mean everyone watching the eclipse will suddenly see green and purple lights dancing around the darkened Sun.

Totality creates twilight rather than a long period of true nighttime darkness. Faint auroras can therefore be difficult to see during the eclipse itself. High latitude locations such as Iceland and Greenland would have better odds if geomagnetic conditions become favorable, but even there an aurora during totality should be considered a possibility rather than a guarantee.

The better opportunity could come later.

If geomagnetic activity remains elevated after the eclipse and the sky becomes sufficiently dark, observers in northern locations may have a better chance of seeing the aurora later in the evening.

Darkness Matters More Than Many People Realize
Aurora hunting is partly about solar activity and partly about finding darkness.

City lights can wash out a weak aurora completely. Someone standing underneath streetlights may see almost nothing while another observer a short drive away photographs a clearly visible green glow.

For that reason, experienced aurora watchers often look for open locations away from artificial lighting with an unobstructed view toward the northern sky.

Weather matters just as much. An intense aurora happening above a thick layer of clouds is effectively invisible from the ground.

Anyone hoping to see the northern lights should therefore check both local weather and NOAA’s short term aurora forecast before heading outside.
