Here’s what the sticker says. What do you think??……

The public reaction to the case reflected these concerns. Supporters viewed Webb as a symbol of resistance against government overreach. Critics focused on the offensiveness of his conduct. Yet regardless of opinions about his behavior, the legal question remained the same: should someone face criminal consequences for engaging in protected expression?

That distinction is essential. A society can disapprove of conduct without criminalizing it. Citizens are free to criticize speech, ignore it, condemn it, or respond with speech of their own. The state, however, possesses powers that ordinary individuals do not. It can arrest, detain, search, prosecute, and punish. Because those powers are so significant, constitutional limits are meant to prevent their misuse.

In the end, Webb walked away with the charges against him dropped. But the episode remains a cautionary tale. The danger to liberty rarely arrives with dramatic declarations or sweeping announcements. More often, it emerges through small decisions made in ordinary moments—moments when someone assumes a right is too insignificant to defend or too unpopular to deserve protection.
