For millions of television viewers, Austin “Chumlee” Russell became one of the most recognizable faces in reality television.
As a longtime cast member of the hit History Channel series Pawn Stars, Chumlee earned a reputation as the humorous and easygoing employee at the famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas.
His jokes, personality, and unique expertise helped turn him into a fan favorite.
But behind the scenes, one of reality TV’s most popular stars was about to face a life-changing legal battle.
In 2016, Chumlee found himself at the center of a major controversy after a police investigation led authorities to his home, resulting in drug and weapons charges that shocked fans across the country. The Rise of a Pawn Stars Fan Favorite
Before the legal troubles made headlines, Chumlee had become one of the breakout stars of Pawn Stars.
Born Austin Lee Russell, he had been friends with Corey Harrison since childhood and began working at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop years before cameras arrived. Eventually, his personality made him one of the show’s most memorable figures.
While often portrayed as the comic relief, Chumlee developed a loyal following thanks to his knowledge of collectibles, sneakers, pinball machines, toys, and video games. His popularity eventually led to merchandise sales, personal appearances, and business ventures beyond the television show.
Few fans could have predicted that his career would soon face one of its greatest challenges.
The Investigation That Changed Everything
In March 2016, police executed a search warrant at Chumlee’s Las Vegas residence during an investigation related to sexual assault allegations. Authorities later stated that while the investigation prompted the search, Chumlee was ultimately not charged with sexual assault.
However, during the search, law enforcement officers reported discovering multiple firearms as well as controlled substances, including methamphetamine, marijuana, and prescription medications. Additional evidence suggesting possible cocaine use was also reportedly found.
The discovery quickly transformed the situation into a major criminal case.
News outlets across the country carried the story, and fans wondered whether Chumlee’s television career had reached an abrupt end.
Facing Serious Charges
Following the investigation, Chumlee was arrested and eventually faced numerous drug- and weapons-related charges.
The situation was serious enough that legal experts speculated about the possibility of significant prison time if prosecutors pursued the most severe penalties available under the law.
For someone whose public image centered on humor and entertainment, the allegations represented a dramatic shift in public perception.
The legal proceedings quickly became national news.
The Plea Deal
Rather than proceed through a lengthy trial process, Chumlee and his legal team negotiated a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Under the deal, he agreed to plead guilty to a felony weapons charge and a misdemeanor count of attempted drug possession. In exchange, he avoided jail time and received a sentence that included probation, counseling, and treatment requirements.
The agreement also required him to surrender the firearms and drugs seized during the investigation.
According to court records and news reports, Chumlee was placed on three years of probation and ordered to participate in counseling programs as part of the resolution.
Why He Avoided Jail
Many observers were surprised that the television personality did not receive a prison sentence.

In Chumlee’s case, the agreement included strict conditions.
