A rough sound escaped his throat.
Valerie froze.
Everyone froze.
Justin made the sound again, louder this time.
Valerie turned slowly toward him, her mouth open, her whole body shaking.
“Justin?”
He looked terrified and amazed at the same time.
Maya stepped forward, tears in her eyes. “The remedy worked. His voice wasn’t broken. It was locked. It’s waking up.”
“That’s impossible,” Valerie whispered.
But Justin was making sound in front of her.
Impossible had already happened.
Marcus still held Maya’s arm gently but firmly.
“Ma’am,” he said, “we still need to handle the security breach.”
He started leading Maya away.
Panic filled Justin’s face.
For 7 years, others had spoken for him. For 7 years, decisions had been made around him. But this girl had found him when no one else saw him. She had given him water. She had given him a choice. She had given him hope.
He drew in the deepest breath of his life.
The sound that came out was raw, broken, imperfect.
But it was a word.
“Ma…”
Valerie covered her mouth.
Justin tried again, tears spilling down his cheeks.
“Mama.”
Valerie collapsed to her knees.
The garden went silent.
Seven years of doctors. Seven years of money. Seven years of trying. And the first word her son ever spoke was the word she had been waiting for since the day he was born.
“Oh, God,” she sobbed. “Justin…”
He looked at Maya.
“Stay,” he said, the word rough but clear. “Please stay.”
The security guard released her arm.
Maya began to cry.
“You did it,” she whispered. “You really did it.”
Valerie crawled across the grass and pulled Justin into her arms, holding him like she was afraid the moment might vanish.
“Say something else,” she begged. “Please. Anything.”
Justin hugged her back.
His voice shook, but it existed.
“Mom,” he said. “I’m okay.”
Valerie sobbed into his hair.
Then Justin pulled back and pointed at Maya.
“She helped me,” he said slowly, each word a miracle. “When I couldn’t call. She found me. She saved me.”
Valerie looked at the girl differently then.
Not like a trespasser.
Not like a threat.
