There’s nothing more frustrating than breaking a key in a lock, especially when you’re in a hurry or it’s cold outside. Fortunately, there’s no need to panic or disassemble the entire lock! Here are 5 simple and effective tips to remove a broken key and open the door without damaging the mechanism.
1. Use fine tweezers or tweezers
If the broken key is still protruding from the lock, carefully grasp it with tweezers or small flat-nose pliers.
Tip : Pull it out slowly, using gentle back and forth motions to avoid further breaking the stuck piece.
2. Try a strong magnet
Some types of keys (especially steel ones) can be removed with a strong magnet.
Attach the magnet to the lock hole and gently pull; the metal portion of the key will slide out.
Note: This method does not work with brass or aluminum keys.
3. Use a saw blade or sewing needle
Place a thin hacksaw blade , stiff needle, or sewing needle next to the stuck item.
The goal is to hook the key onto one of the prongs and pull it toward you.
This method requires a bit of patience, but it’s very effective if you don’t have pliers handy.
4. Lubricate the lock
