For years, I thought I knew how to do laundry. Like most people, I filled the washing machine, added detergent, pressed a few buttons, and went. But no matter what brand of detergent I used, my clothes often came out dull, scratchy, or with that faint, musty smell that never went away.

Only recently did I discover something surprising: the problem wasn’t the detergent, the washing machine, or the water. It was me. Or more precisely, the problem was with the way I was using the detergent dispenser.

Over time, thick layers of residue can accumulate in this drawer: soap scum, fabric softener residue, and even mold if the area remains damp. If this happens, the washing machine will no longer rinse or wash properly, and your clothes will be far from fresh.

I thought wiping it off with a damp cloth would be enough. But that wasn’t the case. The dirt that had built up beneath the surface was slowly ruining my laundry and preventing the washing machine from working properly.
