Despite the overwhelming allegations, Bradley Dawson denied all charges during his eight-day trial in the Lautoka High Court. His lawyer, Anil Prasad, argued that prosecutors failed to present sufficient evidence to justify a conviction and also rejected the notion that Dawson attempted to flee after committing the crime. However, Judge Riyaz Hamza highlighted Dawson’s “appalling” behavior after the incident, noting that he fled the scene by kayak, abandoning his wife without assistance.

It took Fijian authorities 36 hours to locate and arrest Dawson, further strengthening suspicions of his guilt. Judge Hamza also noted that Dawson had no accomplices and held him solely responsible for Christie Chen’s death.
